Austrian - Bon apetit

Today I was again slow in the morning. It is becoming a bad habit. It feels like I waste time especially before noon. I woke up around 9:30. I opened the window and filled the room with cold fresh air. I lied in my warm bed and enjoyed the difference in temperature and maybe dreamt a bit about Finland. Then I entered the kitchen/common room with plans of preparing and eating breakfast. Before even starting I got stuck infront of the stereo and programmed in the radiochannels. I found a celtic channel and there was a Ceilidh piece coming. Samuel and me danced for a minute and listened astonished to the lady in the radio speaking celtic. Then I started preparing. I had no juice and only two slices of ham. I ate musli and bread and drank tea. I went back to my room and wrote a polite email to my bank in Finland. Then I took a shower, dressed ate a tin of tomate soup. From there I continued to Old Dumbarton road to cut my hair for the first time here. I entered and the only barber was cutting of dark hair from a foreign head. I sat down and read a bad newspaper and EU-law. Then they were ready and I sat down. The barber didnt understand what I meant with.
-Shorter but the same style with a local touch.
-What is a local touch, he asked
Go figure you artist, I tought.
He started. Soon he got annoyed by the amount of hair that was situated on my head. The scissors and comb got stuck in it. Once he cut my air and I heard how he grasped for air. We had a jagged conversation. He was from Algeria and I was from Finland and the name of the barbershop was Yorkshire barbers. Globalized, the world is. When ready I stood up and walked to the table where payments were arranged.
- Six pound
- I tought it was four for students. There is a sign outside
- Yes, but you had so much hair.
Students have only short hair I tought but was quiet. I left the building not very happy. Therefore I will never go again to the Yorkshire barbers on Old Dumbarton road.
With a head smelling of gel I continued to uni and floor seven of the main library. In there I was from 2 to 7. At 7 I walked home through a dark West End. Marco had sent earlier a message that Hubert, our neighbour was serving dinner today. At 7:25 I rang the doorbell and entered. The door was open. At flat H there were already Hubert and his mother and sister plus on of each country Germany, China, Italy, Hungary, Canada and me. Huberts mother had made some delicious food. Greacy fat meat prepared for four hours. With central european "knödels" and potatoes and "kraut" sallad. It was so good and different from what I had been eating since I came here or in my life. I thanked for food after a conversation. Me and Samuel returned.
Yesterday was Monday. I had saved a bit too much reading for the morning. I read and walked to uni. I participated as usual and the class was laughing. After the lecture I walked to the library and stayed there until 5:30. I bought some bananas and milk from Iceland and walked home. I made hamburgers and chips. Homemade and delicious a la Elias. At the table I spilled a whole glass of milk over the table and the first issue of Kirkkonummi municipal library magazine. I finished and returned to my room and searched for a birthday present for myself. I found the perfect thing. I drank a cup of tea with Samuel and Fernando and went to bed.
On Sunday I felt tired and ill. I had a cold. I watched to films and wasn´t outside on the whole day. Starwars and Under Siege. It was a day of flu.
On Saturday I stayed for some time at the library studying. At 9 pm when Fernando returned from Edinburgh from a Judo competition party arrangements took place. We were going to celebrate Fer`s 20 years. At ten it started. People came and the flat was filled. About 40 people in very small commonroomkitchen. At 1:20. The senior recident of duty entered our flat(we dont know who let him in). He said if we stopped the party now we wouldn´t be held accountable for this and all future partied were forbidden. So the people had to leave. I started cleaning and at 3:30 I had had a shower and entered my bed.
On friday I was on the most intersting lecture of life. Actually it was a debate. The main guest was Martti Koskenniemi author of the From Apology to Utopia. It was raining when I walked to the Wolfson Medical Building on University Avenue. The morning I hade been reading some preparatory reading. The lecturing was outstanding and the opposing contributions were sharp. I have never been so interested in International law in my life. After the event wine was served. I managed to talk a bit with Martti in finnish and english. It was a big day but right now I`ve written so much that I cant be bothered to be enthusiastic enough. Friday night was just home staying.
On Thursday I had classes . I had again saved to much reading for the morning. I went to the lecture and it was overwhelmingly interesting. I walked home. At 7:30 a couple of firemen had a info about firesafety at K-Street. From there I hurried to the reading group at Queen Margaret. It was just planning for ten minutes. Then we played pool at Joes bar. On my way home I met the usual gang, Andrea, Davide, etc. I walked with them to the Primary for the international society pubnight. I had a long discussion with an Italian girl who was studying in Brussels. Then I walked home speaking finnish with the finnsih teology-student. Now, best friends, we are updated.
On Wednesday I prepared for coming classes on Thursday.

Sorry, you were out

A week has passed and it is time for me to update. On Wednesday Jenni and me went for the second sightseeing in Glasgow. This took about 4 hours. About 500 pictures were taken again along this day. So the story will add up to about 500000 words (one picture 1000 words). We went to the new part of Glasgow and from there to the Botanic Garden. It was lovely. Later we ate "pripelsås" with exellent bread from Somerfield for only 73p and a dessert from lovely Iceland. The night was then here.
On Thursday we had a calmer morning. I went to a class at 13 and returned 15. We ate a bit and and went to the museum of transport. A museum that would certainly interest Isak and Titus, my brothers. At 5 it closed so we had only an hour there. From there we continued to the South Side between the Science Center and the BBC. It was rough and I was scared. First to Bellahouston Park. There people were snowboarding and skiing on synthetic snow. The slopes were short. From there we continued to the next park, Pollock Park with the Pollock House. It is a museum. Now it was dark and the museum closed. Only the moon was up. We started of the third park even further away. We stopped at Morrisons and bought juice. We drank and it was refreshing but a bit strong. On the bottle it said concentrate, add 4 parts water to one. Oh! We continued to the park but were unable to find it, Queens Park. When we decided to turn around we realized we were a bit lost. We asked a man for help.
- Where is the river Clyde.
He explained and we found our way. It took though time. We were home around 9 and were exhausted. Quite a march.
On Friday Edinburgh was on the menu. We jumped on a train after ticket shopping. The train was ok, a bit expensive. Only 50 minutes and we were in there. It was much different. We started from the turist office to the Castle. From the Castle we walked down the Royal Mile to The parliament. I herad yesterday it was expensive to build and it is already falling apart. I´m not sure if I liked it. Then we walked up to the hill in Holyrood Park. That was the best part of Edinburgh. Up on the hill we dined. Apples, chocolate(?), juice, bread with ham and cheese and liqorice(?). Back down and we walked on the other side of the valley and came to the other hill. From there we walked down to the city and Jenni bought clothes and shoes. Then we decided to go back to Glasgow. We were not allowed to get on the train because our tickets were "super saver". We could travel the earliest at 18:30. We waited for 20 minuted and went back. At home Samuel was preparing the Toga Party. We ate hamburgers and chips, homemade. Then we helped a bit with the arrangements. We put on our togas. Mine was made of a towel and a scarf and Jennis was a bedsheet from the salvation army for 1 pound bough by samuel. People arrived and the flat was full. It was fun. Then the party ended and I avoided all the cleaning. There had been an argument about the cleaning but at that time I was sleeping so I didnt hear anything.
On Saturday we had a more humane day. I ran to the bank to sign a paper again for opening the account. Jenni went shopping and we met after that. Back home we had a fast lunch. Then we went to the Kelvingrove art gallery. There were some nice works. I realized I lived very close to some really nice pieces. I tought I will return. We returned. Later we put on some fancier clothes. We ate out at "The wee curry shop" at Buccleuch street. When we had ordered our drinks I asked if we could pay with visa. They said only cash. I had to run out and search for a ATM. I found one. It didnt accept my card. I found another one, got the money and returned 15 mins later. The food was good but the service was crap. They counted the bill wrong. We took the tip back we first gave them. To make things clear. Then we went to The Goat. There I met a boy that used to play football at the Kelvingrove park. He had broken his arm in a match. I drank a guiness and Jenni a glass of wine. Then we went home.
On Sunday we bought Jennis bus ticket. First we had some trouble finding a ticket. We printed it at the library. Bought a scissor for nails and DVDs for all the photos. Jenni packed her bags, burned the pictures. Then we ate Endives with Jambon. I messed up the Bechamell(?) sauce. In fact I had never done it before. It was delicious. Then we walked to the bus station. It was sad when Jenni left. I walked home, drank some tea and read about equality.
It was very much fun when Jenni was here, indeed.
Yesterday was monday. I had lectures and I had a cold. The evening and night I lied(?) in my bad skyping with family and writing mails.
Now it is today, now. I will get the pictures soon.

Snoaring at 61

Time runs. I would go back in two months to Finland if I had chosen the other option. I am very happy I chose right. I do not recommend anyone to go on an exhange shorter than one semester. It`s not worth anything, in my thinking. Men are slow.
This morning Jenni arrived here. It was raining and dull but the weather changed. She dumped her suitcase in my room. After breakfast we started the first sightseeing. From the 61 to uni, from uni to city center and from there to the river clyde and back. Some 500 pictures taken of the city, I recall. The day was nice with only one shower. Back home I started studying. Jennis thinking was slowing down, 38 hours awake is a lot. After fish&chips and some french cheese she was ready to sleep and I eager for studying. The charter of UN and the Lockerbie case. I drank tea and listened to Smooth Mellows on Smooth FM. No my teacup is empty and I´m getting annoyed by the music. Let me move on.
Yesterday was monday. The day with lectures. I had EU law 11-1. I managed to push out som words out of my mouth. The strangest contribution was, not by me : - People are lucky. I didn´t understand. 1-3 Labour Law was on the menu. I was nervous. Robbie, Greg and me were going to have a presentation in class of a case. I read the description aloud in class and realized how difficult some words are to pronounce. It was scary, but in a good way. I hasted home. Tomatoe soup(?) with carrots and bread. 5 o clock start from 61 back to the uni with Johannes. A lecture with Her Exellency Dame Roselyn Higgins(?). It was dull, I sorry. Some wine was served by people in clean clothes. I run home and picked up fernando. We polished our intellectual looks and started towards QM for EngLitSoc. This time I understood more than I didn´t understand. After the lecture some talking and pool. The heavy rain had stopped falling down on us. We walked home.
Sunday, Saturday and Friday was all studies. I had to read as much as I could so I wouldnt be bound to that when Jenni would be here. I played football on sunday and got caught in YouTube on Saturday.
Thursday I attended the international law and went home to study.
Wednesday was prepering for international law.
Time runs.

Is EU legitimate?

It´s late in Glasgow so it´s dark. Today I woke up late, 10:30. I had my clock set on 9 but I fell asleep again. I went to uni after cleaning the toilet. It was Fernandos turn but evidently he hasn´t cleaned before in his life. At uni I downloaded cases and articles for my EU and Labour law politics cours. From there I continued to the law workshop. Then home, a quick lunch. I decided before eating that I would go out and explore a new part of the city although I had a lot of things to do. I went westwards. I saw a lot of new buildings. I`ll put the pictures here soon. I came home and ate a quick dinner. I started of back to uni. At the Boyd Orr building the international society was showing a film, Paradise now. Around 100 members were watching when I arrived late with two french Kelvinhaugh inhabitants. The film was ok though the volume was far to quiet. I walked back and made a hamburger and played guitar and now I`m doing this.
Yesterday, Monday, I woke up early. I ate breakfast and marched to uni. EU law with prof Thomkins. I spoke in class. My heart beat hard in my chest. After that I continued to University Gardens 9 to attend Politics of Labour Law. The classroom door was locked so we had to wait 20 mins for someone. I spoke in class again. I am great! From there I went to the law workshop and from there home. I tried to study but I failed. I ate pasta with red pesto and mature cheddar. 8 clock Elias left the building. I arrived on time to Queen Margaret and met some english society members. I ordered one pint "of the cheapest" and someone laughed. Professor Robert Grant held a lecture about Yates, Byzantium and the machine: some modern paradoxes. I understod approimately 5 % of the content. It was fun though. After that we discussed, even some litterature. Home!
Sunday was a day of studies as was saturday. Sunday night I watched the Cider house rules. It was good. I was at the uni reading. On Saturday night I watched Sleepy Hollow by Tim Burton. It was good as well. I did nothing else that weekend. My mother and others concerned about my frequent pub visits , - relax!
Friday I studied, of course, but not much, of course. In the morning I went to Byres Road a gave back my awesome black winterboats of the brand Clarks. Unluckily the heels were falling of. I had my money back and found a new library. I borrowed a couple of CDs. I had to pay for them, 80p each. From there I continued to the Botanic Gardens. I saw som exotic fish and banana trees. It was a very nice victorian place. From the Victorian dream I continued to the German dream, Lidl. I bought food and walked home. In the afternoon Fernando, me, and Samuel played football in the Kelvingrove park. There were others playing so we set up a real final. Before ten we went to Queen Margaret. I met a friend from the English litterature. I had had to much to drink so he told me the same stories at least two timed each. Andrea, Fernando and me walked home in the night.
Thursday I had my first lecture in International Law and the problems of contemporary worldorder. It was immensly interesting but hard though. After the lecture I sat down on the uni hill and caught some sun. It was a beuatiful day. In the evening I went with Erik from Sweden to the Primary and chatted with a lad from Norway. He was here with his wife. A man from Mexico who was disillusioned with the Mexican government, a german girl and boy and some others. I had with me a pair of gloves sewed by my mothers fathers sister. An Austrian commented they had the same colour as asbest. I took it as a compliment.
Wednesday I studied. At 3 I went to uni for a intro to the library. It was all very easy. I went back home and studied.

2.10 One Month in Scottieland

Today, it`s the second sunny day. Yesterday, it was the first, the first sunny day since I came here. So far, the weather has been nice altough the days with blue sky has been very few. Two, to be exact. Everyone else is already at uni. My next lecture is at Thursday. Now, I`ll have breakfast.
Yesterday I had my first lectures. 11-13 The Institutions and judicial control of the european union and 13-15 politics of labour law. The lecturers were open and friendly. In both subjects there were two lecturers. We started working immediately. The level of english and thinking was high. I managed but I had some difficulties to orally contribute with something valuable. The pace is fast and the discussions at the seminars turns and shifts. It was tough very interesting and different from lecturing in Finland. In the latter lecture I was the only one not scottish.
After the lecture I limped to the mainbuilding and read in the sunshine Naomi Klein. I continued home and made hamburgers with toast, feta and sallad. At 5, me and the spaniards Fernando and Maria started of to the faculty of law for the erasmus cheese&wine. I had to change the date in my clock. At the law library it was sweaty. It was filled with people, about 80 different nationalities. That night I had the opportunity to chat with students from Sweden, Norway, Neatherlands, France, Scottland, Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain and maybe I forgot someone now. I´m sorry dont be offended, please. I spoke with Ms Fletcher, lecturer in EU law, and told her about her good reputation at the uni of Helsinki. I spoke with a scottich boy about Elsa(European law student association). They are trying to set it up here. So I`ll probably be a senior partner from the beginning. From there a good many of the students went to Coopers. The reason was pints for 1 quid. There I discussed with an Australian girl about the conditions of living for Aboriginal(?) people. She told me that they have serious alcohol problems because of unemployment. Therefore, the government has introduce a ban. They are not allowed to buy alcohol. The army was sent over to these communities to enforce it. It sounded absurd in my ears.
Suddenly Fernando said that it was 20:40 I said it was 19:40. Apparently I had set my clock one hour wrong. We rushed to the Queen Margaret union building via Ashton Lane. We arrived late. We made a very smooth entry. Dr Robert Maslen lectured and recited Mervyn Peake and I set my watch. It was beautiful, exact and well prononced words in a certain order. Of course I didn`t understand everything. I just enjoy listening and it`s good training. Afterwards there were discussions but I was quiet. Fernando and me returned home. It had been a rich day.
On Sunday I was home and hanged around. I also studied European union law. In the afternoon we went to Kelvingrove ParK. We played football for 2 hours. There was a egyptian boy. He said: Of course I`m a terrorist, I´m from egypt. In the game I kicked someone very hard. After the game I realized it had been quite a hit. I limped very badly that evening and was a bit worried. Today, it is better. I was tired that night. It is great to play here. Usually there is a game you can join when you go to the park. Fernando and me watched the Shawshank redemption in my room. Marco and Andrea watched in Andrea`s room
On Satudray I went to the Main uni library and read for almost four hours EU-law. After that I visited Lidl and bought fruits I didnt really need. But it was 70% off, all fruits. I walked home with a heavy bag. I made some food and watched "Courage under fire". An unpleasant and stupid film.
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday I studied labour law. I read an article of Karl Marx and two more by other authors. It was, eye-opening.
Friday I stayed home and watched Born on the fourth of July. Not good.
Thursday, there was a pubnight at the Primary arranged by the international society. I chatted a lot with a German lad. He was of the opinion that the bar was like a train station. He had just been on a field trip in Africa and he lived on the east side of the wall in Berlin until he was six when it fell. It was ok fun.
Wednesday night I plannedc to stay at home and watch the Downfall, about Hitlers last days. I changed my mind and went with a lot of spaniards to town. We tried to get in a place called Bambu. They said that there was something wrong with our shoes. After a couple bars we ended up in the Firewater. I did some mindbending single dancing and actually someone was clapping hands.
